Urdu poetry is full of themes and metaphors, often borrowed from Persian poetry. This is my humble effort to collect and categorize well known (and some not so well known) couplets (ashaar) based on topics. The topics have been indexed alphabetically for easy reference.

The list is not exhaustive by any means. If you don't see your favourite sher for any of the topics, please feel free to send them to unwaan@urdupoetry.com

The couplets are written in transliterated Urdu (Urdu written in the English/Roman script). I recommend that you spend a few minutes getting to know the transliteration scheme that I use. This will make it easier for you to read the ashaar.
